In 2008, Zhang Fei returned to his hometown of Hangzhou. Unfortunately, he fell seriously ill and had to receive intravenous treatment in the hospital every day. 

This is not an easy experience. After hard work, Zhang Fei often went to the clinic alone and felt tired in the infusion room, 

but he dared not really relax because he had to stare at the infusion bottle. The talent of designers is to discover design materials from around them. 

This time, Zhang Fei discovered the infusion monitoring system.


From 2008 to 2011, Zhang Fei integrated various technologies through design to achieve new functions of the product and solve new needs. 

The infusion monitoring device can monitor the remaining time, drip rate, and even remotely control the stop and continue of infusion. 

This way, even if patients seek medical treatment alone, they will not experience blood reflux after infusion due to fatigue, 

reducing the workload and errors of nurses. This is a new direction in Zhang Fei's design career.


When asked about this, Zhang Fei believes that the infusion monitoring system is more of a "new attempt in product design" than an invention. 

In his opinion, technology itself has no directionality, and design can ultimately maximize the value of many technologies. 

Just like his wooden design, showcasing the maximum functionality of the product in the simplest way possible. 

When asked if he would try other inventions in the future, Zhang Fei admitted, "Similar designs will have great potential. If similar inspirations arise,

 I will definitely try to challenge designs that are considered inventions again.

 

Forest Life  


Whether it's design or invention, Zhang Fei takes it seriously and enjoys it. He puts a lot of energy into design and doesn't reluctantly compromise. 

Every product is like his child, full of love. Zhang Fei believes that he should be responsible for it and also for the users. Nowadays, 

there are many designers who use logs as materials, and Zhang Fei is one of them. His design has its unique features, 

a simple and beautiful design style, maintaining an original and sincere attitude, constantly trying and adhering to his own views. 

This is the advantage of the original design and the answer given by Zhang Fei.


Nowadays, the original design is gradually being known by more people, adding a sense of fulfillment to Zhang Fei's busy life. 

In his spare time, buying something interesting but impractical to design, acting as a plant in a quiet place, playing chess, 

drinking tea, and skateboarding with friends are all part of Zhang Fei's life and the inspiration for his wooden design. 

For him, the conflict between work and family has always been present. He can only temporarily put aside his work to appease his family, 

but after a little relief, he returns to work. Zhang Fei explains this busyness as the fate of a designer.

A good design should not have a short lifespan, but rather a long-lasting vitality. 

Zhang Fei hopes that everyone who chooses the original design will touch it, feel it, 

place it in their home, get a warm light, use it as much as possible, and be with it.

 

Bond with wood  


Many great things trace their origins back to accidental events like the Big Bang.

At the end of 2011, approaching the Spring Festival, designer Zhang Fei designed and produced two wooden desk lamps in small quantities. 

The curve of the lamp post is smooth and beautiful, and the cotton and linen lampshade is antique, complementing the wooden lamp base. 

Zhang Fei firmly believes that products have gender, and he instinctively chose interesting and appropriate names for his works, 

MAN and WOMAN, and then gave them to family and friends. However, the positive reviews received for these two desk lamps exceeded Zhang Fei's imagination.


Prior to this, Zhang Fei had been a product designer for many years, designing plastic and hardware products for many companies,

but no material fascinated him as much as natural wood. Among various materials, logs do not require any modification. 

They are originally trees that grow in the wild and are resilient beings. They have kissed the sunshine, felt the breeze, witnessed the changing seasons, 

spring flowers and winter snow. This vitality emanates a new charm through Zhang Fei's design, and almost instantly,

Zhang Fei is captivated by this new charm, which is indeed an interesting fate.


The original design team established in 2004 was reorganized in 2008, officially and clearly embarking on the path of original design. 

But it wasn't until the end of 2011 that Zhang Fei and his original design gained more and more attention. 

At the beginning of the design, Zhang Fei tried almost all domestic and foreign woods on the market. 

Every type of wood becomes unique after gaining new life. Different colors, different appearances, different patterns, different warmth. 

Zhang Fei examined each item carefully.


In the end, it was discovered that American white wax wood was the most suitable for his design,

as the annual rings of the wood abandoned the purpose of calculating age and reassembled a unique and beautiful pattern. 

In the hand, besides the smooth texture of the wood, there are beautiful and intricate patterns. 

You can still feel the sunshine it draws from life. Once you start designing wooden products, participating in designer awards, 

designing new products, and establishing a brand, everything appears natural and logical.

 

Growing like a tree  


For the original design, Zhang Fei hoped it would be practical, emotional, sincere, and aesthetically pleasing. 

In his view, products have life, carrying the feelings and emotions of designers. Ultimately, they should be an essential presence 

that injects a stable and steady force into a family. With this idea in mind, Zhang Fei established his design philosophy, 

injecting ideas and emotions into the product through design.


Since ancient times, trees have been the main building and household materials. Compared with metal,

 they are less cold and more gentle. The ancient carved beams and painted rafters and today's simple nature reflect the aesthetic of an era. 

Different designs have different appearance curves. The wood grain of white wax wood is not suitable for all curves. 

With more designed products and a single pattern, its charm decreases. So, beech and maple also tried to incorporate the original design.


Looking at the product itself, Zhang Fei's design is more like what Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa called "unconscious design". 

Many of us know what we want, but we never realize it. Zhang Fei's design easily seeps into our surroundings. 

When we first saw a wooden egg with many paper clips around it, we felt confused and didn't understand the designer's intention for a moment. 

It wasn't until we saw the product introduction that we suddenly realized that a few paper clips, 

a few push pins, and scattered staples on the desk would run around the table without even noticing. 

This egg took on the responsibility of collective recycling. The design is so clever that Zhang Fei even encourages everyone to guess 

how he put the magnet into the wooden eggs, and the appearance of each wooden egg is almost perfect.


Excellent design is not just about appearance, nor is it about change and complexity. It should conform to people's habits and facilitate their lives. Fortunately,

Zhang Fei is someone who pays attention to life and focuses on design. His designs do not have complicated patterns or bright colors, 

and simple styles are practical enough. The natural wood grain, fragrance, and color of wood are not eye-catching,

and the natural beauty of wood is warm and shiny. Zhang Fei understands and appreciates such beauty, and therefore insists that every work must be unpainted.
